Papers of Zabdiel Boylston Adams, 1861-1981 (inclusive), 1861-1894 (bulk).

Contains Adams' letters, 1861-1865, written to his family, describing military camp life, battles, maneuvers, medical activities, and family matters. Also includes his account of the Wilderness battle; history of the 7th Massachusetts Regiment; reminiscences written in 1884 and 1894 of his military and professional activities; and war diary, 1862-1863. Additional material consists of clippings of newspaper reports, 1862, and notice and poster, 1981, for a lecture on Adams for the bicentennial celebration of Massachusetts Medical Society.

Adams (Harvard, M.D. 1853) served as an army surgeon during the Civil War. After the war he had a medical practice in Framingham, Mass. and was medical examiner of the Eighth Middlesex District from 1890 to 1902. He was an ardent advocate of vaccination.
